The main advantage to use the 64-bit operating system is to allow 128 GB of RAM in.

Notes:

  • Support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020

  • We recommend you move to a Windows 10 PC to continue to receive security updates from Microsoft.

The recommended (and easiest) way to get SP1 is to turn on automatic updating in Windows Update in Control Panel and wait for Windows 7 to notify you that SP1 is ready to install. It takes about 30 minutes to install, and you'll need to restart your computer about halfway through the installation.

To check if Windows 7 SP1 is already installed on your PC, select the Start button, right-click Computer, and then select Properties.
If Service Pack 1 is listed under Windows edition, SP1 is already installed on your PC.

Before you begin

Check if your PC is 32-bit or 64-bit

You’ll need to know if your PC is running a 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) version of Windows 7. Select the Start button, right-click Computer, and then select Properties. The version of Windows 7 is displayed next to System type.

Disk space requirements

Check to make sure your PC has enough free disk space to install SP1.

Installation method

Estimated amount of free disk space needed

Windows update

x86-based (32-bit): 750 MB

x64-based (64-bit): 1050 MB

Downloading SP1 from the Microsoft website

x86-based (32-bit): 4100 MB

x64-based (64-bit): 7400 MB

Back up important files

It’s a good idea to back up your important files, photos, and videos to an external hard disk, USB flash drive, or the cloud before installing the update.

Plug in and connect to the Internet

Make sure your PC is plugged in to power and you’re connected to the Internet.

Disable antivirus software

Xp 64 Bit Service Pack 2

Some antivirus software might prevent SP1 from installing or slow down the installation. You can temporarily disable your antivirus software before the installation. If you do so, make sure you’re aware of the risks that might be involved and re-enable the antivirus software as soon as SP1 is done installing.

Installing Windows 7 SP1 using Windows Update (recommended)

If your PC is set to automatically install updates, you’ll be prompted by Windows Update to install SP1. Follow the instructions to install the update.

To manually install SP1 from Windows Update:

  1. Select the Start button > All programs > Windows Update.

  2. In the left pane, select Check for updates.

  3. If any important updates are found, select the link to view available updates. In the list of updates, select Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB976932) and then select OK.

Note: If SP1 isn’t listed, you might need to install some other updates before installing SP1. Install any important updates and then follow these steps again to check for SP1.

  4. Select Install updates. You might be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice.

  5. Follow the instructions to install SP1.

  6. After SP1 is installed, sign in to your PC. You might see a notification indicating whether the update was successful. If you disabled your antivirus software before the installation, make sure you turn it back on.

Downloading and installing Windows SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center

If you’re unable to install SP1 from Windows Update, you can download the installation package from the Microsoft Download Center and then install SP1 manually.

  1. Go to the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 download page on the Microsoft website.

  2. Select Install Instructions to see which packages are available for download, and make note of the one that you need.

  3. Select the appropriate language from the drop-down list, and then select Download.

  4. Select the packages you need to install, select Next, and then follow the instructions to install SP1. Your PC might restart a few times during the installation.

  5. After SP1 is installed, sign in to your PC. You might see a notification indicating whether the update was successful. If you disabled your antivirus software before the installation, make sure you turn it back on.

Troubleshoot problems installing Windows SP1

Xp Service Pack 2 32 Bit Download

If you try to install SP1 and see an error message that the installation wasn’t successful, this might be because there’s a problem with the Windows Servicing Store that is used to install updates or because your antivirus software is preventing the update from being installed.

To try and fix the problem, follow these steps and then try to install SP1 again.

Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool

  1. Select the link in the table that corresponds with the version of Windows running on your PC.

    Windows version

    Link to Microsoft Download Center

    Windows 7 32-bit (x86)

    Windows 7 64-bit (x64)

On the Microsoft Download Center page, select your language and then select Download. It might take a few minutes for the tool to download and install.

  2. To install the tool immediately, select Open or Run and then follow the instructions. To use the tool later, select Save and download the installation files to your PC.

  3. On the Windows Update Standalone Installer screen, select Yes or OK.

  4. On the Installation complete screen, select Close.

  5. Try installing the service pack again.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

If your PC isn’t able to find or install updates, the Windows Update troubleshooter might be able to fix the problem.

  1. Select the Start button, and then select Control Panel.

  2. In the search box, enter troubleshooter and then select Troubleshooting from the list of results.

  3. Under System and Security, select Fix problems with Windows Update and then follow the instructions.

  4. After the troubleshooter is done, try installing the service pack again.

Introduction

This information is valid for all versions of XP x64 (64-bit) running Service Pack 2.

Before adjusting your service settings, ensure that you or your system has already installed all updates by “checking now” for any available updates via Windows Update.

I cannot possibly test all configurations extensively (meaning, each persons specific computer needs), but what I can offer is what “works for me” and the obstacles I have came across so you do not have to discover them on your own.

Notes for a Happier Computer and User

Windows Xp Professional 64 Bit Service Pack 2

  • Do not use “msconfig” to disable services, type “services.msc” in the Run box instead! (Why?)
  • Before disabling any service, check out the service information about each by selecting the service name links provided.
  • If you do not wish to select/change each service by hand, I offer up Service Registry files to adjust them with only a few clicks. Currently, “Default” and “Safe” are available.
  • Service settings are global, meaning changes apply to all users.
  • All of these services are “Standard” with Windows XP Pro x64 (64-bit) after the installation of Service Pack 2. If you discover something other than these listed here running, another program installed them. View a listing of the more common ones.
  • Still unsure? Put your setting to “Manual” or the listing under “Safe.” Manual allows Windows XP to start the service when it needs to (or when ever it feels like it), but not at boot up. Depending on your configuration, not all services will start when required while in “Manual” mode. If you find you need a service, place it in Automatic.
  • After adjusting your service settings, reboot your computer.
  • If you do not have some of these services listed, do not panic! If your computer manufacture “pre-installed” your XP, they choose not to have certain services installed for you. This is, in most cases, a fact with OEM versions of Windows XP Home.
  • Disabling all of the “unneeded services” reduces the footprint of the OS by up to 70%, depending on system.

Table Header Information

Windows Xp Service Pack 1 2 3

  • The columns are sortable. Select the column header to sort by that field.
    (JavaScript Required)
  • Display Name ~ How it displays in the Services Control Panel.
  • Service Name ~ What name is used in the registry.
  • DEFAULT ~ What Bill G. thinks should be running on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.
  • “SAFE” Configuration ~ This is the configuration that 95% of the people will be able to use with little or no side effects. It will also minimize the amount of “errors” that is reported in the Event Viewer. This does not guarantee it will work for you, but if adjusting your services scares you, this configuration would be a good starting point.
  • Tweaked Configuration ~ This is the power user setup. This setup is a system that connects through a network (such as a gateway / router) to the internet, provides file and print sharing resources and gaming enjoyment. Some things may not function with this setup. No passwords save. Its use is not for a computer with analog modems or some direct DSL/cable connections. Try the “Safe” Configuration first.
  • Bare-bones Configuration ~ This is the super geek setup. This setup is a system that connects through a network (such as a gateway / router) to the internet with a static IP address. This system does not provide file and print sharing resources, nor have the ability to print. Its use is not for a computer with analog modems or many direct DSL/cable connections. You can use this configuration for extreme tweaking and testing purposes. Many things may not function with this setup. No passwords save. The Event Log will display “errors” of not being able to start certain services. Built in Windows CDR-RW functions may no longer work. Please do not ask, “How do I fix” questions while using this configuration. The answer will be “Use SAFE.” This information’s intention is for reference only.

Configuration Information

Service Pack 2 Xp 64 Bit

  • Automatic ~ With a service in this state, it will start at boot time. Some services, when no longer required, will also automatically stop when not needed. However, this is very rare. If you find you do not need a service, place it into Manual or Disabled.
  • Manual ~ Manual mode allows Windows to start a service when needed. However, very few services will start up when required in Manual mode. If you find you need a service, place it into Automatic.
  • Disabled ~ This setting will stop a service from starting, even if needed. Errors in the Event Viewer will show up complaining of that fact. Some services, while Disabled, will constantly complain. However, this situation is taken care of if placed in Manual. The service descriptions identifies those that should be in Manual vice Disabled.
